BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

One thing I've always wanted to improve upon is my notoriety with tardiness. Constantly battling with time, I’ve been known to have my wins and losses. Being late, for me, is never intentional. I always intend to be on time. But we know that intentions alone never quite suffice. Shoving years of wayward excuses aside, I now mentally tack on an extra 30 minutes to the insufficient hour allotted. If I have to be somewhere by 6AM, I should leave my house by 4:30AM... Yikes!

What of this particular day? Fail.

Fully aware that the cushion I wanted to give myself by leaving half an hour earlier had already thinned to chronometrically threadbare, I accepted the familiar state of defeat against my nemesis [again] and expected to be late for my 1 o’clock class [yet again]. I went to change, and pulled my shirt off overhead, when I heard a whipping sound from outside?

A glance at the whirlwind of flurries outside might be misperceived as winter, but in her bitter nature, she was sabotaging spring’s debut, not letting her show her radiance. I was used to the cold, windy days whipping the extra length of telephone wire against the house, but this sound was particularly startling.

From the corner of my eye, I jump at something moving by the kitchen window.
Was it a person?? Up here? I live on the 2nd floor!

I take a step backward, out of view, into my bathroom. Completely vulnerable, I reach over and grab the shirt to cover my front, but thinking better of it, I just put the whole thing back on.

I peer out and see some GUY at the window. *gasp*

I look to see what he’s doing. Sometimes people work in the backyard, maybe he was fixing something? But I watch for a bit, and it’s clear he’s fixing his way to GET IN!

Not really thinking, I just knew I had to stop him.
I went over and lightly knocked on the window.
Haha, as if I didn't want to disturb him.

Either he was so focused on prying the screen from the window, or I didn't tap hard enough at first, that he didn't notice me right away… I knocked some more.

Even my approach was polite in manner, "Excuse me… can I help you with something?"

He just looked shocked and kind of jumped back as we stared at each other for probably a long second or two. I don’t think he even heard me, but he was probably surprised that anyone was home. I don't know if we were specifically targeted, or if it was a random act, but he must've known we were Asian, there was a giant tub of 고추장 (gochujang- hot pepper paste) staring at him from the counter!
I really wished that I had my camera on me, or at least my cell phone to take a picture of him. Or use the phone to show as a threat. But it was far off, at the other end of the house. It was impossible to pass the window without being seen.

He quickly turned and jumped away from the ledge, and from what I could tell, left through the front gate that was left ajar.

It turns out the sound was a ripping, he tried to cut the window screen, but couldn’t get through. That’s when I saw him prying at the window. There’s no fire escape, but he was standing on top of an awning-type of structure above the backdoor from downstairs! Poor architectural design!

I was immediately thankful for God’s protection over my family and home, that being late was useful for once, and I was able to help deter the possibility of theft.

Not that we even have anything worth taking. Unless he wanted my archaic PowerMac 8600? Beige tower, baby still runs! And there's even some room left on its spacious 2GB hard drive. Or my voluminous collection of Babysitter's Club books? Heehee.

In hindsight, it wasn't so smart of me to walk in front of him like that, what if he had a gun?
Or maybe I should've pretended to act crazy, or scream and threaten something like,
“YOU BETTA MOVE YO ASS OUTTA HERE, THE COPS ARE COMIN!”
instead of a girly, “Excuse me, can I help you?” haha. [insert slap to forehead.]
Where was the rage when I needed it?
Try to break into my house- whatever... Try to cut into my lane- FORGET IT.

Actually, in all seriousness, if he had gotten in, he obviously had something sharp enough to rip part of the screen, so a struggle would've been dangerous if he tried to attack, or even deadly since someone was home sleeping at the time.

So of course I still put in an effort to be on time… but again, I thank the Lord, better late than never… :)
